In continuity with what is also the mission of the OCS, to stimulate the creation of original works and contribute to the artistic development of Portuguese composers, in 2020 the composer and pianist Filipe Raposo was invited to compose a work for Orquestra Clássica do Sul. The result was the piece we will hear in this concert with the composer himself as soloist. The Symphony No.1 by S. Prokofiev and Three Pieces in Ancient Style by G. Górecki will also be added to his work. Without a doubt, an exceptional concert.

S. PROKOFIEV: Sinfonia nº 1 em Ré maior, op. 25, 'Clássica'
It can be said that this piece is of a transparency similar to that of a finely cut diamond. Dated 1917 and composed in D major - a popular and luminous tone of the 18th century - Prokofiev (Sontsovka, now Krasne, Donetsk region, Ukraine, 23 April 1892 - Moscow, 5 March 1953) decides to follow the model of the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. Divided into four movements according to classical tradition, each of them is so compact that the complete symphony does not go beyond fifteen minutes. The opening Allegro is full of irony that evokes both Prokofiev and Haydn. The Larghetto of the second movement transports us to the dance movement so characteristic of the classical symphony. For the third movement, instead of the predictable Minuetto, Prokofiev chooses to include an amusing Gavotte, whose octave intervals present in the melody give it an almost comic character. The Finale, given the recurrence of the harmonic sequences of major chords, presents itself in a fast, virtuosic and very brilliant musical writing.
H. GÓRECKI: Três Peças em Estilo Antigo
From this Polish composer of the second half of the 20th century, known for his musical identity of high emotional expressivity, active and rich in orchestral timbral changes, we present Three Pieces in Ancient Style. Composed in 1963 for string orchestra, they are of neo-modal musical language with minimalist characteristics. In these pieces Górecki combines some techniques of modern musical composition with elements of folkloric origin, in a result of great musical density. This effect is built through the gradual and almost imperceptible increase of intensity that grows to a climax, and the exploration of the rich tonal palette of stringed instruments.
The first piece develops slowly in a contemplative mass of sound. The second piece, by contrast, rhythmic and vigorous, evokes medieval music and dance, with repetitive almost hypnotic rhythms. The third piece takes us back to the contemplative atmosphere of the first.
In these Three Pieces in Ancient Style Górecki shares with the audience some of his deep Catholic faith through the spiritual atmosphere of his music.
FILIPE RAPOSO: Concerto for piano and orchestra
In the words of Filipe Raposo: Composing is a large-scale enterprise, where we try to translate through a grammar of sounds the way we perceive reality - the unspeakable. Through poetry I find a way to create a bridge between the primordial moment of creation and the moment of fruition. One of the poetic forms that best synthesizes the poetic moment is the Haiku - constructed by three verses, with a strict metric (5, 7, 5), it creates a close relationship between the simplicity of existence and the contemplation of nature and of the moment. It tries to translate the unspeakable, through a synthesis of sounds and symbols. It is a form of song where rhythm and melody intertwine, harmony and texture. Thus, I like to think of this concert as a gesture of synthesis (also tripartite), where I try to translate this moment with the same poetic simplicity.
